What is mental health and what affects it?

Mental health includes your psychological, emotional, and social health and decision making. Mental disorders can be caused by anything that disrupts your mental health, including brain chemical imbalances, high physical, emotional or mental stress levels, or traumatic events.

How common are mental health conditions?

1 in 5 Americans experiencing a mental health disorder in a year, with 1 in 25 experiencing serious mental illness, and 50% of the U.S. population experiencing mental illness sometime in their life.

In the U.S. population, nearly a third (30.6%) of adults 18-25, 25.3% of adults 26-49, and 14.6% of adults age 50 and up have some sort of mental disorder varying from mild to severe.

The physical toll of poor mental health

While normally only 10-18% of the population has problems sleeping, 50-80% of people with mental disorders have sleep problems.

Depression alone has been linked to a 50% increased risk of dying of cancer and a 67% increased risk of dying from heart disease.

Severe mental illness can reduce your expected lifespan by 10-20 years, which is comparable to the 9-24 year reduction incurred by drug and alcohol abuse.
