In NYS, a CDL is required for drivers operating commercial vehicles such as large trucks, buses, and vehicles that transport hazardous materials. Typically, this includes vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of over 26,001 pounds, vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver), or any size vehicle used to transport hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placarding.

A CDL in NYS is different from a regular driver’s license as it requires passing more rigorous written and skills tests. These tests are designed to ensure that the driver has the specialized knowledge and skills to safely operate large and potentially more dangerous vehicles.

A CDL allows individuals to legally operate different types of large commercial vehicles in NYS and across the United States. Depending on the class and endorsements of the CDL, drivers can operate large trucks, passenger buses, school buses, vehicles carrying hazardous materials, tankers, and double/triple trailers.

No. DOT and CDL physical exams are occupational expenses and are not covered by insurance. For any other service, Nao Medical accepts most health insurances.

The examination fee is $125, regardless of whether you have insurance or not. This cost includes urine analysis and a vision test!

You need a DOT physical examination if you are a commercial driver operating:

 – Commercially used vehicles with a gross weight or combined weight over 10,000 lb (approximately 4536 kg).

 – Vehicles designed to transport 16 or more people, including the driver.

 – Vehicles transporting hazardous materials.

A New York State Department of Motor Vehicles-issued commercial driver’s license is valid for 5 years, but every two years, you must certify that you meet the federal medical requirements to drive commercial vehicles.

The NY DMV will send you a notification between 45 and 85 days before your commercial license expires, but you can renew it a year before the date specified on your commercial driving license.

Every two years. Nao Medical provides all healthy drivers (truck, school bus, and taxi drivers) a Medical Certificate valid for two full years (the maximum allowed in the State of New York). Other institutions might provide documents with limited validity of 6 months or 1 year and require renewal at the end of that period. Drivers with health issues might need to return sooner.

Our health professional will talk with you to get a brief medical history for the DOT/CDL physical examination.

Following this, you will receive a physical examination of all your body systems.

A vision test will be conducted for acuity and color recognition. Don’t forget to bring your glasses.

An auditory examination will be conducted.

A urine sample will be tested for blood, protein, and sugar.

An ECG (heart examination) may be performed on those with heart problems.

The DOT physical examination is conducted to ensure that truck, bus, and taxi drivers are medically competent to operate commercial vehicles. If we conclude that you are physically and medically qualified to operate a commercial vehicle, we will complete and sign your CDL certificate. You can hand it directly to your employer or any DMV in the State of NY.

For your convenience, we offer the following payment options:

 – A payment of $125 at the time of your visit (regardless of your health insurance coverage). Cash, credit, and debit cards are accepted. Personal checks are not accepted.

 – Full payment by the employer at the time of service.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles issues a Commercial Driver’s License to those applicants, residents of the State of New York, who have a Class D, Class E, or a non-commercial Class C license. A valid CDL from another state makes you eligible to apply for a NY CDL, and you may additionally be required to surrender your foreign license (federal regulations).

The purpose of the 1986 Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act was to improve road safety and also remove risky drivers from the roads.

This Act sets minimum standards that must be met by all drivers to receive a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The Act declares it illegal to possess more than one driver’s license; you can have a regular license or a commercial driver’s license, but not both.

Likewise, you can have a license from the state in which you reside, but you cannot possess multiple CDLs from more than one state. Federal regulations require you to pass the physical exam every two years and be at least 21 years old to operate commercial vehicles across state lines.

 – Class A: Any combination of vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 26,001 or more pounds, and the GVW of the vehicles being towed is more than 10,000 pounds.

 – Class B: Any single vehicle with a GVW of 26,001 or more pounds, and the GVW of the vehicles being towed does not exceed 10,000 pounds.

 – Class C: Any single vehicle or combination of vehicles that does not qualify within Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver, or is used to transport hazardous materials.

In many states, exceptions apply to farm vehicles, snow removal vehicles, fire or emergency vehicles, and some military vehicles.

To be licensed to operate certain commercial vehicles, additional exams are required. If passed, such endorsement will appear on your CDL. The five DOT applications you can apply for are:

 – T―Double/Triple Trailer (Knowledge test only)

 – P―Passenger (Knowledge and skills test)

 – N―Tank Vehicles (Knowledge test only)

 – H―Hazardous Materials (For HAZMAT, knowledge test only)

 – S―School Bus (Knowledge and skills test)

Regulations by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) require interstate commercial drivers to be medically fit to operate their vehicles safely and competently. You must have passed a CDL medical examination in the previous two years and carry a medical certificate issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT) at all times.

An acceptable proof of examination for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is a Medical Certificate according to Form 649-F (6045). A medical examiner will have to complete the FMCSA’s Commercial Driver Fitness Medical Examination Report and its certificate at the end of your visit.

The physical examination seeks to determine the medical condition of school bus drivers operating under the Taxi and Limousine Commission and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) under Article 19A: The purpose of a Medical Examiner’s Certificate is to verify and certify that the vehicle driver is physically and medically fit to operate a school bus in accordance with Commissioner’s Regulations 6.10 or 6.10-a.
